We are seeking a skilled and curious IT Operations Engineer to join our international team. Candidates should be as excited as we are about learning and applying best practices and new technologies in infrastructure engineering, including AI-assisted operations, to keep a platform used by thousands of people every day reliable, secure, and fast. In this role, you will maintain and enhance Smartling's cloud-based infrastructure, ensuring high availability, security, and performance. Smartling's infrastructure is entirely code-driven, built on AWS, and extensively uses containers (ECS), Amazon Linux, and many other AWS services. Monitoring is achieved with tools such as Splunk and Datadog.

Your Responsibilities

• Improve the security, performance, and availability of Smartling's AWS infrastructure.
• Build internal tooling and agents used by the operations and engineering teams.
• Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure and security issues.
• Perform system maintenance and automate repetitive work.
• Support employees and customers with escalated technical issues.
• Participate in an on-call rotation for IT Operations incidents.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Skills & Experience

• Deep understanding of internet technologies: DNS, HTTPS, HTTP proxies, NAT, TLS, mail, routing, and core protocols.
• Proficiency in shell scripting and languages such as Ruby and Python.
• Knowledge of infrastructure automation tools such as Terraform and Puppet.
• Experience with AWS services, particularly ECS or a comparable container platform.
• Familiarity with RDS, especially Aurora MySQL.
• Experience with monitoring tools; Splunk, Quickwit, and Datadog are preferred.
• Working experience with AI coding and agentic tools (Claude Code or similar) in daily operations.
• Understanding of security principles and their practical implementation.
• Proven ability to support and optimize high-traffic, mission-critical systems.
• Experience working in agile development environments and contributing to continuous deployment pipelines.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills to collaborate with people across the organization.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Security, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience.
